Gunung Jerai to get botanical garden
ALOR SETAR: A botanical garden with various types of flowers that grows in cold weather is being planned for Gunung Jerai,
the tallest mountain in Kedah, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.
She said the 1,217m-high mountain had the potential to be turned into a highland attraction with its beautiful landscape, cool climate and panoramic view.
“We have allocated RM2.5mil for the project for two years until 2012. The allocation is from the 10th Malaysia Plan for tourism activities,” she said after meeting with state MCA leaders here yesterday. Also present was state MCA chairman Datuk Chong Itt Chew.
Ng said the ministry was only focusing on this project as it felt that there was no point in awarding big allocations for tourism projects in the state when the number of visitors to the state had dropped.
She said that under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, Kedah received RM115mil for 129 tourism projects.
